Chris Rock Criticizes The Music Industry

And I agree!

Chris says:
"Music kind of sucks. Nobody's into being a musician. Everybody's getting their mogul on. You've been so infiltrated by this corporate mentality that all the time you'd spend getting great songs together, you're busy doing nine other things that have nothing to do with art. You know how shitty Stevie Wonder's songs would have been if he had to run a fuckin' clothing company and a cologne line? … Rap sucks, for the most part. Not all rap, but as an art form it's just not at its best moment. Sammy The Bull would have made a shitty album. And I don't really have a desire to hear [billionaire] Warren Buffett's album - or the new CD by Paul Allen. That's what everybody's aspiring to be."

Which brings us to my rant: Why don't people care about the music these days? Why is music simply viewed as just another platform to rake in cash? I'm tired of seeing these supposed musicians slapping their name on any and everything out of greed. Clothing lines, perfumes, cellphones, bottled water, energy drinks, make up, hair color, resturaunts, credit cards, tv shows, movies, the list goes on! The music ends up being just as cheap as all of the other rubbish they're dishing out.

Is anyone capable of just being a musciain anymore for the sake of the art and not the possibility of mucho money?

Lordy lordy, I thought it was just me. I'm happy to see that at least two other people have noticed that music went from a passion to a career move. Not that there weren't sellouts over the decades, but it seems so much harder to find artists who are true to their vision rather than their demographics. Great post!

I totally agree. It's not saying people shouldn't care about making money from their profession, but at one point in time popular artists actually had to work hard and put out quality music to make the sales to get that money. Now they dish out any ol rubbish as music, endorse hundreds of crappy products and the mass will eat up. It's really quite sad and sickening.
